JAWiC Leadership Initiative

Problem : Jamaican women are not adequately represented in coffee industry policy formation.

Solution : While fundamentally giving women the power of a collective voice, JAWiC is also developing training and mentorship opportunities to uplift leaders and policy shapers in our own community.

Women in the coffee industry have earned a role in shaping the policies that affect their daily lives. JAWiC is engaging with government and industry leaders to amplify the voices of our community and speak for the needs of women. Visit our blog or follow us on Instagram to see where we’ve been recently.

We are also working to provide tools for JAWiC members to create leaders in Jamaica’s coffee sector, including mentorship and training opportunities. JAWiC is currently working with two business mentors who guide our own progress as an organization and teach valuable entrepreneurship skills to our members.

“Research shows that companies with at least one female director have better share price performance and return on equity, and companies with more than one woman on the board return 3.7% a year over those that have none. Having at least 30% of women in leadership positions added 6% to net profit margin. [1]“

Who Benefits?
This initiative is targeted at serving…

Project Lead : Joan Webley

Current Status : JAWiC board members have been meeting with mentors from Entrepreneurs Across Borders and LEAP to help establish our organization formation and plans for the future. We’ve also been leading by example, with board members recently featured in the international press for action on climate change issues.

Next Steps : JAWiC board members will continue to engage with acting officials as advocates for women in coffee policy and meeting with our mentors. We are also actively seeking more training and mentorship opportunities for members.
